Today marks the start of a new literary journey on Planet Literature. This time we will be travelling with the mysterious South Sea beauty Paula, who will discuss her strange views on Western civilisation with us.
On Paula’s small South Sea island there are no prisons and no army, no parties and no property. She looks at what we take for granted with the astonished eyes of a child.
Looking at the world through Paula’s eyes is sometimes not easy. But in the end, there is often a feeling of liberation, like when, on a chilly day in August, you have finally mustered the courage to take a bath in a lake warmed by the summer heat.
At least that’s how our narrator feels as he recounts his encounters with the mysterious South Sea beauty in his Conversations with Paula. He begins by telling us how he got to know Paula:
